The objective of network design audit is to help an organisation develop an understanding of its current network’s performance, functionality, capacity, availability, scalability and flexibility in the context of its enterprise objectives. The data obtained from this audit is then used to inform a preliminary high-level design proposal that aims to address both existing and future requirements. A network design audit is a common initial step amongst organisations planning to improve their network infrastructure to cope with change and/or expansion.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A NETWORK DESIGN AUDIT?
A network design audit essentially involves comparing what is required against what is currently in place, and then presenting the outcome of that analysis in the form of a summary set of design recommendations. The steps involved in this process are:

• STEP 1: Creating a diagram of existing physical network topology (structure)
• STEP 2: Creating a diagram of existing logical network topology (protocols)

• STEP 3: Identifying current network usage (traffic). At the design audit stage a low level analysis from the OS management console is generally sufficient
• STEP 4: Ascertaining network requirements in terms of organisational objectives
• STEP 5: Output - Summary description of requirements against existing infrastructure
• STEP 6: Output - High level diagram of proposed design recommendations
