LAN Communications

WHAT IS A LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)?
At Progressive Networks we define a LAN (Local Area Network) as two or more computers in close proximity (usually in the same building) connected together for the purpose of sharing resources and information.

WHAT DO I NEED FROM MY LAN?
A properly implemented computer network is always worth far more than the sum of its individual parts. Well designed LANs save money through the sharing of hardware resources and internet access; improve operational efficiency through the sharing of data and applications; and deliver greater control through the centralisation of systems’ administration and security. If your LAN is not delivering on one or more of these points, it is likely to be a LAN costing valuable time, resource and money.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LANs?
Designing and implementing a successful LAN effectively means striking an optimum balance between what is wanted, what is possible, and what can be afforded. Striking this balance is (very simplistically) a matter

Further Information

of deciding upon the right network topology for a given environment (star, ring, bus, mesh or hybrid), constructing it with the most appropriate network connection media (copper, optical, fibre or wireless) and then tying it all together with properly configured network devices (switches, routers, bridges, hubs and access points). If these basic elements are not put together correctly and carefully fine tuned for the delivery of optimal performance, the result is likely to be performance bottlenecks, segment failures, broadcast storms and bridging loops. Not only do such issues cause hours of frustrating downtime but they can be extremely costly to put right – much better they’re simply avoided in the fist place!

WHAT LAN SERVICES DOES PROGRESSIVE NETWORKS OFFER?
Progressive Networks offers substantial expertise at every stage of the LAN development lifecycle from the design and implementation of new projects, to the audit, improvement and management of existing solutions. Our LAN services are by no means limited to, but typically include:

  • LAN Extension Circuits - If you have more than one site enjoy the benefits of evolving your LAN into a WAN!
  • IP-NET – Progressive Networks’ proprietary LAN Extension Service.
  • Wireless LAN (WLAN) - Progressive Networks holds a Cisco specialisation in the design, build and management of wireless networks.

We also offer the following consultancy services:
